Just thought I'd mention that my great aunt was called Gladys but she was always known as Gladdie by the family. Carolyn

Joan I live about 10 minutes drive from Littleham. If you give me any details (in a PM if you prefer), I'll see what I can do. Will be going to bed in a minute, so will check in the morning. Angela

Hi Angela My Mum was fostered by the Wise Family in Littleham nr Bideford. She attended Littleham & Landcross school 1912-1917. The man I spoke to was actually a brother to Mum's 'foster father'. This was nearly 20years ago, and before I realised how difficult it would be to find out anything about Mum's history- with hindsight I should have asked a lot more questions, though I doubt I would have got any answers. Do you live anywhere near Littleham? Jo

Joan What was the name of the village? As I'm more 'local', I can try & find out for you if I can. A

Thank you Old Crone Holden & Trish - I have tried Gwladys but not Glenys. My Mum was always known by Gladys Dark ( the name on her school record 1912-1917) but the village man I spoke to did not recognise her by this name. He referred to her as 'Gliddie' or 'Gleddie'. I have even tried using this as a surname search for about 1905 but still no success with a birth record. Jo

Many years ago I visited the North Devon village where my Mum was 'fostered' as a child. I spoke to an elderly man who remembered Mum as 'Little Gleddie' not as Gladys. Does anyone know if 'Gleddie' could be a derivation of another name? There is no birth record for my Mum in the name she was known by - she did not know her parents names or birthplace. Jo
