I have a James Hennesy born Cork Ireland c 1826 on the 1871 and 1881 census for Liverpool. In 1871 he is listed as a pensioner and with the help of kind people on here we have ascertained that he was probably an ex serviceman. I have searched 1861 and can only find a James Hennessey, born Bandon Cork, c 1832, on a ship called Renown in Beirut, Syria. What's the chances of him being my James? Any ideas/opinions? Thanks Simone x |

Might this be him? ADM 29/68/478 Original page number: 478 James HENNESSY; Rating; Born: 1 August 1828, Cork; Age on entry: [Not Given]; Dates served: [Not Given]; Date and Type of Application: Whitehall 21 July 1864. See also ADM 139/329 CS 32893 Richard MCLEOD; Rating; Born: 1 January 1824, Leith; Age on entry: [Not Given]; Dates served: [Not Given]; Date and Type of Application: Whitehall 22 July 1864. This is from the National Archives website. ADM 29 includes sailors discharged to pension. I found my ancestor there, and the record (which is on microfilm at Kew) should show the various ships he served on. You can follow him from ship to ship and possibly get a physical description. |

He has also got a continuous service number. Unfortunately, it's an early one, so you can't access it online, but that should show the same details. |

If you can wait to the beginning of August, I'm going to Kew then and it will be a very simple matter to get a copy of the record: it should just be a single sheet of paper. |
