Maiden Names

I had an email today about one of my Rellies on here, and I was asked what was her maiden name. For the benefit of Newbies out there, please note that all the female names in my Tree are Maiden names, and this is the norm in genealogical research. Usually, if someone asks who were the Parents of a particular individual I will give the full name and surname of the father, and the mother's given names with her maiden name in brackets.

Another tip for newbies - if you don't know the surname of the wife don't just put the husband's name as that can be misleading. I put 'Mrs Husband's Surname' so that I know when I look at my tree that I need to investigate further ie John Smith married Jane. I record her as Jane /Mrs Smith/. The Mrs will stand out when you look at the tree. Toni

Some peole, if they don't know the maiden name will put the married name in (Brackets).

A lot of those people will form part of that vast family, the UNKNOWNs. They seem to have spread all over the country, many emigrating to foreign shores. There are rumours that they are related to the INCONNUs in France, and the UNBEKANNTEn in Germany. They appear to have been a very talented family, because they spawned a number of poets, writers and artists - many working under the pseudonym ''Anon''. A few people have suggested that, actually, Anon was just one, extraordinarily talented and long-lived person, from before the age when most people had surnames, but no-one has been able to come up with definitive evidence to prove it. Most amazing of all, is that they appear to be a larger family than even the SMITHs! ;-) Christine
