Computer Systems crashed at work so I have been sent home for an early weekend and thought I might pick up the quest. I'm stuck with my Great Grandfather John Hunter. Who is the one person in my tree I realy want to know about. I have a photo of him (ww1 France) and a marriage certificate. I know he married Mabel Gertrude Andrews in Sawston, Cambridge Feb 1919 aged 33 a private in the seaforth highlanders. Witness was his father Alexander Hunter Occupation Independent means. My uncle has his ww1 medals including a long service good conduct medal so I know hi regimental number is 8149. I have his medal card so I know he went to war in Oct 1914. My grandmother was born at Fort George August 1921, John was still a Private, and I beleive he went on to serve in Ireland as I have a photo of my Grandmother in Belfast as toddler. and this is where Iam stuck I know he died when my grandmother was young and I beleive he is buried in sawston cambridge. There is no death certificate for that area and the church will not respond to me buriel email enquiry(might write them a letter latter) I dont know where or when he was born, I thought Scotland and there is alot of John Hunters with a father of Alexander apearing on the census. I tried requesting his military records from the army personal centre but this was returned as i do not have a exact date of birth. So as you can see Im stuck, any suggestions- Sorry for the long message hope you made it to the end

Hello I don't have any experience in this area but if you have his regimental number maybe you could try and contact his regiment rather that the army, if that makes sense. There has to be a record of that number somewhere. You may also need to write a letter to the church or maybe ring them directly. I know I'm not much help. Toni

There may very well be a Website for the Seaforth Highlanders. have you tried Googling?

Can you get to Kew to see if they have any of his service record there? Christine

If you google a lot of information comes up for the seaforth highlanders and how to locate people who served in the regiment. Failing that try the The national Archives especially as you have his service number. Gwen
