hello my name's susan and i have just started my family tree. i was wondering if stillborn and babies that died at birth are registered in the normal way. i know my nan had 4 stillborn baby boys in belfast from about 1945- 1953 my other nans brother(who was a twin) died but we don't know if that was at birth or later. another relatived in belfast died when she was in labour. also if any one can give any tips on how to trace family in ireland and scotland as i have found out many names and areas but not sure where to go from here thanks

Afraid Ireland is a difficult place for tracing ancestors. If you enter Irish ancestors in the search box at the top of the board it should bring you up quite a lot of recent tips on this.

Don't know about Ireland, but in England/Wales, babies born alive are registered in the ordinary way. My husband's baby brother has a birth and death cert, though he only lived 2 minutes. Stillbirths have been registered since 1927 but they are on a closed register and copies of certificates are only available to parents or siblings. nell

Susan, In Scotland, as far as I know, still births and deaths of hours/days old babies are registered in the normal way. For your scottish relatives try www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Tricia
