Hi i was wondering i am searching for my grandmas brothers and sister and you may have read on a previous post that i have fallen out with my grandma over this so cannot ask questions. I know that her brothrs and sisters are called Clifford, Everett, Dudley, Eldred, Beryl, Avis, Esmie and Enid Vincent. I have been doing BMD searches and can only find a handful of these people but as they didn't have to have there mothers maiden name i am not 100% sure that i have the right person, even though they are born in the correct place. Is the only way i will find out by ordering al of there birth certificates?? Or is there another way which i don't know about as this way will cost a fortune. Thanks Jen |

IGI = International Genealogical Index a collection of birth, baptisms, marriages and a few deaths/burials. Some are taken from parish registers, others are personal submissions. You can search the IGI on www.familysearch.org Its coverage of 20th century is not as good as earlier centuries but you never know! nell |

Maiden names started appearing in 1911 (last 2 qtrs) so most of them you should be able to find. |

Jennifer Is this the family from Cornwall? If so, google Cornwall OPC and Cornwall Family History, there is a great mountain of information on Cornish family history and almost every little village in Cornwall has some anorak who has done the village back to Adam and Eve LOL! You may strike very lucky, although you may come across a bit of resistance as many of these people could still be alive. OC |

Thanks Old Crone you got it in one. I will go and google it now. I ordered her birth certificate yesterday, i decided that as she told me not to look at this side of the family tree and has fallen out with me that i am going to look at this side. Thanks again Jennie |

Jennifer I don't know if its just Cornwall, or whether its a general thing, but elderly people down here are still bitterly ashamed of being illegitimate/poor etc and will go to almost any lengths to cover it up. They think (often quite rightly I'm afraid) that their neighbours etc will be highly delighted to find out this hidden scandal, and that as a consequence, all their 'respectability' and local standing will be damaged. It is an attitude which cant be shaken by reason, in what is generally a tight knit community with very long memories. The Manager of my local FHC in Cornwall transcribes old Cornish Parish Registers as part of her routine duties. She told me that she was approached by an extremely distressed elderly lady who was terrified that her life long secret would come out - she was born two months before her parents wedding. Since then, this particular Manager does not transcribe any illegitimate births onto the IGI - as she says, its still in the Parish Registers for those who really want to look for it, but not available on the Internet for some nosey parker! As I said to you before though - the ancestors are yours just as much as they are your GM, she doesnt have exclusive right to them, so carry on with what you are doing - she doesnt need to know. OC |

Thanks old crone. I belive that she is embarrased as her real mother wasn't married married when she was born and her father fled the scene before she was born so her grandma adopted her. As you say this could upset/embarrass her. Nowadays though most people don't even bink an eye lid if you have children without being married. Right will continue searching. Thanks Jen |
