Hi Nell Sneaking on from work.... Good tips. Thanks On 1901 Eliza is recorded as 'wife'. I do have access to 1837online BMD records so I'll go check - still doesn't explain his absence in 1881 and 1891? Karen - back off to work - groan

Freebmd isn't complete. Have you gone through the GRO death indexes in their entirety for the relevant period? You could look for his children's marriage certs and see if they start saying 'deceased' for him at a certain point. Or find his wife's death cert and see if she is described as 'wife' or 'widow' on it. what is her marital status on 1901? nell

Dear all I'm trying to find out what might have happened to my grandfather's uncle. His name is Charles Richard Corrall and he was born Jan-Mar 1861 St George, Southwark. He appears on the 1861 census with his parent's William (b. 1837) and Elizabeth and a brother William living in Southwark On the 1871 census he appears with his parents again, and although 1st brother William died, he had another brother William, a brother James, sisters Elizabeth and Mary Ann still living in Southwark. And this is where he goes missing. On the 1881 census they have been wrongly transcribed as Cowall - but Charles is not there. He marries Eliza Renwick in April - June 1891 but I cannot find him in the 1891 census. His first child, Charles Richard, was born in 1894, St Olave Southwark. His last child I can find currently was Mary Ann born in 1900. No trace of him on the 1901 census although I can find his wife and four children. No trace of his death on FreeBMD. Any ideas? I've tried searching for Boer War soldiers - no trace. Not vital to my tree really but I am interested to know how someone can be so elusive! All help gratefully received. May not be able to reply easily because I am at work(!) :( Karen
