I have come to a dead end with my Leighton line. No parents shown on his death certificate. Father listed as Thomas on his marriage certificate, but I can't identify which Thomas. Birth always listed on censuses as Pauntley Gloucestershire, but no record of him on Pauntley Church records. 1851 census shows him living with his wife in Dymock, but the only likely person on the 1841 census is working as a servant on a farm in Ledbury, with no family with him. Has anyone any suggestions for any other way to identify his parents.

Fay, Not sure who you are looking for, Thomas? Can you put a few more details and I'll look for you. Wife's name marriage year, etc.

James Leighton born Pauntley in 1823 and married Eliza Harris (1826) in Dymock. The only clue I have is father's name Thomas on James' marriage certificate. Unfortunately Thomas is a very popular name in the Leighton family.

Fay, These two Leightons were born in Pauntley with father Thomas and mother Comfort around that time. Have you tried the spelling Layton? 1. CHARLES LAYTON - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 30 OCT 1831 Pauntley, Gloucester, England 2. HENRY LEIGHTON - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 15 MAR 1829 Pauntley, Gloucester, England Rose

Thomas and Comfort had at least seven children between 1827 and 1840, most of whom were christened in the Parish Church in Pauntley, but unfortunately the earliest record is Henry in 1829. If my James did actually belong to them I can't find any record. I have checked all the derivations I can think of.

Have you checked the nearby parishes - and not just on the IGI but the actual parish registers? nell

At a wild shot, Ledbury and indeed Gloucestershire are on the Welsh border - any chance he may have been born in an area which was classified as Welsh?

Who were the marriage witnesses when James and Eliza married? Do they help to link to one of the known Leighton families? I am in the same boat and can't find parents for my 3xgreat grandfather b. abt 1813. At least you have a father's name to point you in the right direction. By trawling through parish records, you may find your James as witness to family events.eg marriages. This won't be proof of parents but again might help favour one family over another. Can you find James informing on a death cert. of a Thomas Leighton who you can identify from census help.? I think you are going to have to look at the bigger picture on this query, in order to find your answer. Gwyn

Okay, Parish records make sense, but where do I find them? And Census help is new to me as well, so can someone fill me in there as well.
