Quick question - finding marriages

I am searching through the marriage index for the marriage of William Rhodes to Sarah Jane. I think it must have been around 1869 as they were born in 1849 and their first child was 1870. It will have been in Bradford. With no maiden names on the records at this time how do I cross check and make sure I have to right one?

Could b this one - It is the only one in Bradford on a search 1867 = 1870 on Free Bmd. Try to find them on previous census and see if they are living nearby - look on subsequent census and see if there are any Jefferies relatives living with them, or nearby. Also worth checking IGI to see if it gives parents' names ? Marriages Sep 1869 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Greenwood Ruth Bradford, Yk. 9b 246 HOLROYD Joseph Bradford Yk. 9b 246 **Jefferies Sarah Jane Bradford, Yk. 9b 246 **Rhodes William Bradford Yk 9b 246 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dea x

There are a few possibles around that time on free BMD -this is a possible Marriages Sep 1869 JEFFERIES Sarah Jane Bradford, Yk. 9b 246 Rhodes William Bradford Yk 9b 246 Have you found them on the 1871cesus - can you find a Sarah Jane Jefferies born at the same time, same place as your Sarah Jane? Any Jefferies relatives living with them at any time? A copy of one of their children´s birth ceritificates would show mothers maiden name - which would help racing correct marriage.

Hi Emma, You say that their first child was born in 1870, do you have the birth cert? that will give you the maiden name of the mother and make searching for the marriage somewhat easier. Fuzzy x

I tried looking on http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/, but although they have some Bradford births transcribed (none of yours, though, it seems), they don't seem to have any Bradford marriages transcribed yet. Christine

This IS the one - I note on the 1871 that Wm. Rhodes and Sarah Jane are living at 64 Wellington St, Bradford., and that she is born in Bristol !! At No 59 are her parents and brother (who is also born in Bristol. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At No 64 Lewis Arthur Rhodes abt 1870 Bradford, Yorkshire, England Son Bradford Yorkshire Sarah Jane Rhodes abt 1849 Bristol, Gloucestershire, England Wife Bradford Yorkshire William Rhodes abt 1847 Bradford, Yorkshire, England Head Bradford Yorkshire -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At No 59 Alfred Jefferies abt 1822 Mangotsfield, Gloucestershire, England Head Bradford Yorkshire Anne Jefferies abt 1831 Knipwood Hill, Gloucestershire, England Wife Bradford Yorkshire William A Jefferies abt 1847 Bristol, Gloucestershire, England Son Bradford Yorkshire Anne Willie abt 1859 Kingswood Hill, Gloucestershire, England Niece Bradford Yorkshire Looks VERY possible - to confirm this you need to find them all together on a previous census Certainly worth woking on I think ?? Another lead ?? Dea x Have to give up now as I have lost SSoo many of my own - I need to find them,. - Hope this helps. Dea x

Thank you Sarah - No It doesn't look as if Emma is around at the moment. I am really tempted to go further on this one as there are so many relatives now to follow BUT I am restraining myself as my lot need a bit of work - they don't seem to be as easy to find !! Hope it gets her further on - back to my brickwalls now. (Not nearly as satisfying!!) Dea x
