Rootsweb mailing lists and message boards

I'm confused. I have often used Rootsweb message boards for both surname and county but don't understand the difference, if any, between the mailing lists and the message boards. For example, there is a Gloucestershire mailing list and a Gloucestershire board with what I think are entirely different postings. Does anyone know what the difference is? Thanks, Helen

As far as I know, it's possible to browse or search any of the Rootsweb mailing lists without actually subscribing to them. The county lists that I'm interested in often have 500+ messages a month, and I get more than enough e-mail as it is. However, by skimming the archives every few weeks, I can see if there are any topics of interest and, when necessary, e-mail the person who posted a particular message. As much as I enjoy reading threads on this board, I'd go absolutely mad if every posting came through my e-mail Inbox. Tim P.S. In answer to the original question, I have no idea if or how the mailing lists and message boards are connected.

Thank you all. I think I will just keep things as they are - I receive emails from my 'favourite' message boards and for the moment I'll keep scanning the mailing lists to see whats going on. I'm still puzzled as to why both exist and why they're not just amalgamated into one - it just seems a bit strange. Thanks for all your replies. Helen
