Thanks again, Carol - I had seen the Cassidy clan site when I first started researching my tree, but I hadn't been back to it since I found the Drogheda connection. The site seems to concentrate mainly on Fermanagh, but it does have one or two useful links.

Thanks, Carol, I hadn't found the meathroots*com site. Drogheda seems to be partly in Meath and partly in Louth, and as most of it's in Louth, the meathroots site advises you to start there. I had already started googling for Louth sites, in the hope that I could narrow down the area a bit, but without having any more details of the place of birth it's obviously going to be difficult. Unfortunately he has a common name (Cassidy).

Thanks Fran - unfortunately he was born in about 1844. I did have a look on the LDS site anyway, but he wasn't there, and nor were his parents.

Provided he was born after civil registration started (1864)you may be able to find his birth at a family history centre(Mormons). If he had a very common name it would be more difficult as you would have to ask for several certificates, but if you know the parents names I suppose you could ask for a name check. I've had a look at the Irish tips threads, and I'm still confused.

I have his approximate date of birth, parents' names and occupations, and that's all. I don't have a townland or parish. I don't know exactly when he emigrated (sometime between his birth c1844 and his marriage in 1879), and I haven't found him on any passenger lists.

His parents were weavers, so I doubt if they were landowners. He was illiterate, so I imagine they were too. He seems to have been a Roman Catholic.

Is that information likely to be enough to trace him or his parents in Ireland?

Just discovered that one of my Australian ancestors came from Drogheda (it says Droddheda on the death certificate, but I assume Drogheda is meant).
