This is the Genuki page on Wigan, which might have a bit of info: www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Wigan/ Unfortunately, unless you can find the parents with an Irish birthplace (or ee3n county) as opposed to just 'ireland' as place of birth in the census, I think it will be v. difficult to get back further. No records were kept of immigration from Ireland as it was considered part of the same country. All Irish censuses except 1901 and 1911 have been destroyed. You have already tried the familysearch site. Put 'Irish' into the search box at the top of this message board and you'll see there have been many, many queries about Irish genealogy. You might find some useful info on one of them. Good luck Nell (whose husband's Irish ancestor, Callaghan McCarthy, is just a name on a marriage cert of his son Dennis. Dennis became James Carter in later life. Have no way of knowing whether Callaghan was a real person or made up, whether he was from Ireland or born in London - Dennis says that he was born London on all censuses but can't find either of them in 1841) |

Elizabeth, I haven't got time to do this for you right now as grandchildren coming for dinner. (I'm in Oz). I have an hour to do a roast. But have you tried googling parish name and seeing if there is a church there. Or google Catholic in Ireland. There has to be a head office at one of the main cities. Email them and ask. I'll check back later and see if I can help. Good luck. |
