I was still only just dipping my toes into the waters of FH when someone told me about the GoONS. I emailed the contact given, enquiring if she had any information on my gg-grandmother, and was told yes - her father's brother was the said researcher's g-grandfather. I think that makes us third cousins twice removed. Two of my other names are also listed on GoONS, but neither came up with anything (and one took eight months to get as far as telling me that he had no info).

I did not contact GOONS - they contacted me! I was so thrilled, I never thought to ask how they knew of my interest in the name, but assumed it must have been from posting on the TTF Board on here. The info was extremely helpful and I was able to send them a copy of a Will they didnt have. OC

I've just had a look but none of the names that I'm interested in are registered unfortunately.

I had a puzzle in a bit of my tree that isn't really my main project (ancestral chart), but I was intrigued as to how this family had disappeared so completely after 1871. My GOONS contact put me out of my misery - they'd emigrated to Australia. He also sent me a chunk of tree with my bit in it. I was able to update him on a few bits of info which had come my way, so it was all mutually helpful. As was remarked - the response was very prompt, too. Christine

Emma, Just wanted to say that I too have found GOONS to be very useful. I e-mailed someone who was studying one of my names and he was great, giving me loads of information that I would never have found! So its well worth looking for your names on the site! I believe (I stand corrected if I'm wrong) that if you do e-mail someone, they are obliged to reply. Something to do with the terms and contions of belonging to GOONS? Sue

Emma I'm really pleased for you. I help collect information for a registered one name study to help a friend. She has built up an amazing knowledge over the years and has over 1500 certificates so there is a good chance she can help other researchers and is very happy to do so. Most registered with the G.O.O.N.S.are very thorough and most helpful when I've contacted them for various names. I have mentioned them before on here but I don't think many think to look for their surname interests. Gwyn

Yesterday I discovered a wonderful man who is a member of the Guild Of One Name Studies (GOONS). I am currently researching the Varo line of my tree and with it being a fairly uncommon name I thought it was worth a try so I emailed the contact on their website and within a few hours he had already emailed me back with loads of juicy info so I could be up all night tracing some of the leds he has given me. He also says he can probably find the connection between us and prove we are related! Just wanted to let you know, its definitely worth a shot!
