Still having problems with my FTM

Hello again Yvonne - I don't know if you've heard back from FTM technical support yet, but it's probably worth mentioning to them that you're running a beta version of Windows Vista. Is that the only operating system that you have on your computer now? I don't think I'd be brave enough to try it, and certainly not unless I had an option to boot up into Windows XP or Windows 2000 as well. If I were you, I'd take out life insurance on your partner and make sure that it looks like an accident. ;-) Tim

With this beta version of windows it separated the old files into the old window files, you are told to back up these just in case cos there could be a corruption of the file. If at the end of 8 days we just get the starter addition I will back up the original file in old windows then re-install the original disc, and then uninstall the re-install disc then try and reinstall the old windows file of FTM see how that looks if no good reinstall the original discs of FTM, and then see what happens. Thanks everyone for your help, (there will be a murder in 8 days time). Best wishes Yvonne

Curious, I can't understand what the message relates to then.

Peter, If I remember rightly, on one of Yvonnes previous threads she said this was a full version - cost 30 pounds and bought from somewhere like PCWorld about 18 months ago. If she has two applications running then personally I would uninstall them both, and then reinstall the programme again from the master disc. But - that´s a bit risky if there is a fault with the master disc!

I'm still confused why you have two applications on your system You should have a single directory on your C drive called FTW which contains several other folders and the various program files relating to FTM. Re-installing FTM from the original disc should over write any previous installation. I was also trying to work out what the message is that you are getting. It sounds like the program you are running is the special trial version that was on issue a while ago. This gave you full facilities for a limited period after which you had to pay for a full version.

If ALL else fails - you might consider uninstalling FTM and reinstalling from the original discs. As long as your data is backed up, either as a back up file or Gedcom file, then your information is safe.

Hi Tim Before I installed the new windows vista beta we backed up the gedcom files but not the actually application cos we had the original disc, on reboot up of the original discs, then we had the 14 days to buy, now 8 days. In the old Windows xp files the original application can be seen 51 mbs in size the new install is 41 mbs when I try to open the original application it seems to hook onto the new one so is seen as the new one, just waiting to see what happens after 8 days and then see if I can reboot the original file Will let you know what happens. Many thanks Yvonne

I'm not an expert, so I'm not sure if this is correct, but I believe that you need to install the program from the original disks, not from a backup disk that you made yourself. The backup disk is needed to bring your data (i.e., family tree information) across from the old machine, but the program itself should be re-installed from scratch. Hope this helps - Tim

Hi Valerie Thanks for you tip, I have just emailed them now, lets hope they come up with the answer. There nearly was a murder in this house the other night (and still might be yet). Some of my ancestors are missing as well, but that can be easily rectified. Much appreciated Valerie, Best Wishes Yvonne

My partner upgraded my computer and he put my FTM 2005 onto a disc (which I have been using for the last 18 months and was registered etc.), we downloaded the disc but its still coming up with the message 'Buy now, Buy later or learn more' does this mean that I will lose all my facilities on the tree in 14 days. I would also like to thank Peter and Elaine in Spain for helping but its still the same. Can anyone help me or give me some advice as what to next. Many thanks and much appreciated. Yvonne
