Thanks phoenix, I will give it ago I live in exeter and was in the tree house this very afternoon. I have never researched someone through taxs returns and wills etc but I am already getting itchy feet I am on leasve for two weeks from work not going anywere so i said to myself that I am going to attempt to this mystery

If he is a yeoman and you can get to Exeter, try looking at the land tax assessments. These were compiled every year. You paid the same amount of tax each year, so can be followed through and you can find when someone first came in and when they left the records. Look at the card index and note every reference to the surname. Many are now on A2A, but not all. Sadly, most wills were destroyed in WW2, but transcripts made before the war survive: look at the Moger wills. See if there are any miscellaneous parish records for the period and check them for names. The West Country Studies Library has lots of material, so it's worth paying them a visit. The Tree House, also in Exeter, is the home of the Devon FHS. They have masses of things, including family trees. You have to pay to use the last two, but they are definitely worth a visit. Enjoy!

Melvyn, that birth entry from the IGI is just somebody's guesswork, the 'of' part just tells you where he was living at the time of his marriage and he could have been born anywhere at all! Yes, you have got to the tricky part. I don't suppose he was still around for any censuses, especially 1851 or later, was he? Kate.

Have you seen the actual marriage entry from the parish register? It may say which parish the bride and groom were from (it was traditional to marry in the bride's parish so he may have been from another village). Getting a copy of it from the County Records Office solved the mystery of one marriage I found on the IGI as the entry gave the village the groom was from (which was about 25 miles away!!).

You're sure you've checked all possible spellings? Plimsoll comes to mind straight away, and maybe Plimpsole, Plymsall, Plimsall... there's a range of possibilities. Also, because of handwriting errors, Climpsole etc.

Hi Jess, Yes i have got the children but I am just stuck on the father there is a John Plimshole from Whitstone Devon. Whitsone is about 6-8 miles from each other this is my only lead at the moment

I hope some kind person can help me. I would like to know how i continue to researchmy tree. I have got a John Plimshole/plimsole married to an Ann Clapp they married in Topsham Devon in 1800 I have looked for a birth John Plimshole/plimsole in Topsham circa 1775 but there is know birth. Can anyone please advise on my next step. Thank you
