If you have an unusual first name, first name + DOB + place can be a good way of picking up a mistranscribed surname. If it's really, really unusual, just first name + DOB can occasionally do it.

Thanks. I'll try that.

Hi Elizabeth If the place is a small one it is possible to do this I've found. I managed to find an ancestor in Mountnessing Essex by doing this, and the name had been completely mistranscribed, which was the reason I had been having so much trouble finding him! I've also found people by just putting the first name + DOB + place. Hope this helps Allie

Not sure if I've lost the plot completely or just always been stupid, but can anyone tell me if I can look up census on Ancestry with just the date and place of birth without a name? I've tried the wildcards, but they tell me I need a first namd and three letters of surname. Or can I look up just a district? Thanks.
