You can access Origins for free today. If you make saved searches for 1841 and 1871 censuses, you should be able to do fresh searches during subsequent free access visits.

Phoenix, you dont even have to be SOG, today is free for anyone who registers (and you dont need bon fide info when you do, as Merry pointed out!. Ive been trawling for hours on there!

Ah, but SoG have free access at other times to SoG collections only. If you do a saved search while you have access to all the resources, you should be able to access the non SoG sources on future, free visits. I have pointed this out to Origins, but they hadn't closed the loophole on my last visit. As they point out, their census indexes are more accurate than Ancestry, so are a useful tool.

Ive had a go at the census for 1841 but it actually has one missing that is on ancestry which surprised me! Shall I inform them do you reckon? I also find the 'apprenticeship' details a bit of a let down. It comes up there are 14 results or something and then you go through the images and not one of them has your surname. Im sure there must be lots of useful things on there but I unfortunately nothing has jumped out for me. But anyone who wants a trawl, you have about another 9 hours free I believe!

I logged into Origins full of anticipation and hope only to find that the 1841 and 1871 census don't cover Lancashire. So that was the end of that. Feeling frustrated. Ashley

I just registered with them today so I could do the free searches but couldn't search and view because viewer wouldn't dowload for me TIFF. Tried everything but still could get the viewer to dowload. Betty

I've been on there today and was not impressed and could not download the viewer tried so many times gave up in the end. Glad I had the option of searching free will not pay to view. Gwen

Oh dear. Well, I had a head start by having loaded the viewer on a previous visit. I've found: Teachers' records Militia records Apprenticeship records (the soundex type groupings don't really lend themselves to computer searches, but there should only be two references to check for each surname) and I think I've found Nell's Samuel Timbers, who was mistranscribed on Ancestry. The site is being mush more heavily used than usual: I don't usually get downloads freezing on me, but it's definitely been a fruitful few hours.
