To ALL who answered my call for information on the above. The original information I received was from a relation in Canada doing his own research which I now know to my cost was wrong. He must havw got confused with someone else. I apologies for wasting all your time and effort, I have since been told there was no Civil Registration of births until about 1878. Thank you ALL. |

That is simply not true...........it wasn't COMPULSORY until 1875, but registration was started in 1837 for all civil events........... Reg |

Reg, I think we are talking about the Isle of Man here where registration was different to England and didn't start in 1837 as we did. Sam x |

Raymond All is not lost - if James Quayle IS your relative, then the IGI hold many Parish Register entries for this name, including the date you gave. I know that the IGI transcriptions for this Parish (Maughold) are extremely accurate, as I have rellies in the same parish and have looked at the original film. OC |

Well, Raymond and I have already discussed that possibility, Merry! Sadly for me, my 3 x GGM had the temerity to be an orphan when she married, in the care of her guardians (not named!) so I'm pretty stumped. But I do love IOM registers - they ALWAYS give the woman's maiden name, no matter what the event, and the Vicar was a fussy, wordy man who put comments in the margin at every opportunity. He never baptised a 'bastard', they were all 'father known unto God' - how lovely! OC |
