Thanks Jim this thread made me go look again for a Great uncle I was sure he was lost at sea during WW1 but hadn't been able to find him, this time I have found him was a memeber of the Royal Navy reserve and he is on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. I know he was named on his mothers grave but could never find his death now that little bit of the jig saw is in place. Oh and they have change the way to search I found it much easier. Germaine x |

I have a similar case in my family. My grandma told me that grandad had a brother killed in the war but never mentioned the fact that she also had a brother killed. She told me the names of all of her other siblings but never mentioned the name of this brother or another one who returned from the war and married the widow of the one that was killed. I had to find out through my genealogy research. One wonders why they were never mentioned. Margaret |

Hi All, Just read this tread and though let's try finding a missing relative. Went to the web site and entered the first missing relative. No joy. Entered the second missing relative and hey presto! he was listed as killed in action and his parents were named so I know I have the correct relative. I've been stuck on trying to find him for months. I'm very glad I read this posting. Cheers Paul |

We somtimes think we are past being shocked.....and then...... I was browsing the GRO indexes after they became free on Ancestry......looking for dad's relatives (rare-ish surname).......Found I had a half sister no one had thought to mention.....she had died at a few hours old, but even so....... I just say there looking at the screen for ages and ages......Just couldn't believe it! Merry |

After reading the title had to say something similar, my nan had a brother (and I never knew) What is really strange is that when I mentioned him they all went 'Oh yes....' I didn't know until his grandaughter contacted me on this site last year and then we found we were born the same day, same year and have the same first name ALSO do agree about CWWG, have found rels the same way I never knew existed as addresses and names matched, lots of info on there which help or lead you in the right direction Elaine |

William Henry Weatherall. In fact I knew nothing about him until I looked at the 1891 census. Following up on this I searched the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Site and found that he had been killed at The Somme in 1918. This explains my dad’s middle name, and his brother’s name. Since then I have traced numerous rellies who lost their lives in conflicts, so, if you can’t find someone’s death, or they just disappear, consider if they could have been killed in action. |
