I know my welsh grandfather went to America with his welsh cob entire (very tactful description), presumely to make a bit of money, but I don't know when. Trawling through indexs on Ancestry I got: 'Benjamin Owen, Pennsylvania 1910 Miracode Index, Record abt 1833, Greene, PA'. I haven't a clue what sort of record it is, can anyone explain? Cheers and thanks, Moira.

This is apparently an index to the 1910 US federal census for Pensylvania State. Miracode is a method of indexing by the pronunciation of the name rather than its spelling (its a modified version of Soundex which is used on lots of sites to search for names with a similar pronunciation.) According to Ancestry the indexes list name, relationship to head of household, color or race, age at last birthday, marital status, visitation number or family number, place of birth, county, township, and enumeration district number, but have a high omission rate so that some names included in the census are not on the Miracode index.
