On the actual image, it does say Neice and Wife, and Mary is listed first which is unusual. Where it says 'wife' for Fred. however, the word Head has been crossed out. It is indeed a puzzle. I can send you the image if you pm me yopur email addy. Liz |

On the 1881 census actual page for Frederick it says, ''Wife of Niece'', not just ''wife''. So, it should just say Husband of niece! Merry |

Looking at the image again, first is listed: William Brown abt 1823 Findern, Derbyshire, England Head Derby All Sts Derbyshire Then Mary, described as Neice, presumably to William, and then Frederick who has Head crossed out and Wife of Neice inserted. I think it must have been a moment of confusion on the part of the enumerator. Liz |

Sylvia It's a veru confusing image. for a start they're actually living at number 36+37, but this has been obscured by an ink blob. They are in the same household schedule as WIlliam brown and he is listed as head mary is shown as Niece (to William) Frederick is down as '??? of niece' but above this is the word Head crossed out. The ??? could be very well be wife - it looks kind of like it - but I wouldn't be 100% Both mary and Frederick are listed as married. |
