how do i find a military record at kew?

I am looking up charles w ward on the 1901 census, he was born in little canfield in 1873 and was living in cheshunt with his wife elizabeth. his occupation says some thing about soldier infantry and militia, and there are 2 letters there that i cant make out possibly PH, does anyone know how i can find out any more about his military career? Thanks |

His Army record would be at Kew. Knowing his middle name might help trace him. He is the wrong sort of date to have anything available online, I think :o(( Merry |

middle name was william, looks like a trip to kew is in order 0) is ther a way I can find out if they have a record before going incase it is flop and waste of time? |

I think, firstly, someone would have to search the relevant WO (War office) index film to see if he shows on it. Maybe if you changed the thread title to ''How do I find an army record at Kew??'' Merry |

Sounds as though there is a Boer War connection. The Mounted Infantry figured heavily out there. He may have been on leave. Keith |

At that period, the records are sorted alphabetically. You order a box - say for the surname Jones - and work through it. It should be WO 97. Unfortunately there is currently no index to the boxes, but if your man was discharged to a pension he should be there. |
