Have spent a compelling and totally productive weekend tracking my Great Uncle's final journey from Winnipeg to the Somme. So much information, so much help. If anyone would like pointers to sites dealing with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, pm me! But am left with big question......he clearly left South Wales for Winnipeg.....so where do I start ?? Has anyone been this way before??

Hi Ann I can't help but I too would like some ideas. My grandad was aged 16 and at home in Bedfordshire in the 1901 census but the next record I have of him is when he joined the CEF in Barriefield, Canada in 1915. Lyla

Do you know which Division he joined? Have you got his attestation (enlistment) papers? If you have the date he died it shouldn't be difficult - let me know what information you have.

Hi Ann Thanks but I have all the papers for his time in the CEF. Fortunately he survived and returned to Bedfordshire after the war. What I'm curious about is when and how he got to Canada and why. Lyla

Lyla and Ann, this site may help: http://automatedgenealogy*com/index.html (replace * with .) Lyla, this site has the 1911 Canadian census (records are not complete, as they are still be transcribed) and if your ancestor is on it, it may include his date of arrival in Canada. There's a start, at least.

Ann & Lyla You could also try collectioncanada.ca Click on database tap at top - they have the military records for WWI soldiers, but further down there is also a database of Canadian Naturalization. Not sure if your ancestor would have registered for this, as British subjects did not have to. There is also a database of immigrants who arrived in grose isle covering period of 1832 - 1937. This was not the only port of entry to Canada. 1911 Census also searchable - but you have to have patience and really good eyes. Census is not indexed by name but by location, so you will have to scan thru every page for your city and some of them are hard to read. Hope this helps you. Sue
