Betraying my advanced years, Horatia.... when I was at school we were obliged to recite parrot-fashion all sorts of measurements and I remember they went in the order of Acres, Rods, Poles and Perches. Take a look at: http://www.gwydir.demon(.)co(.)uk/jo/units/length.htm [REMOVE BRACKETS]

Hi there, I have copies of some tithe maps that concern where my ancestors and relations lived in Norfolk. I am happy with all the information and can interpret it OK apart from the measurements. Is anyone knowledgeable in this area? Joshua Kemp was the occupier of a cottage and garden owned by John Halls in Burnham Thorpe. There is a column that says: Quantities in Statute Measure with three vertical columns which have headings: A R and P. Does this stand for Acres, Rods and Perches? If it does, Joshua had 30 perches. How big is that? My direct ancestor Charles Kemp and others occupied cottages and gardens on land owned by Charles Leverett in Burnham Thorpe. The measurements for this is: 1A and 28Ps. I assume this is 1 acre and 28 perches? Lastly, my direct ancestor John Yarham, occupied cottage, gardens and pasture on land in Wighton, Norfolk, owned by the Earl of Leicester. John Yarham had 24 ps (perches?). I hope someone can shed some light on this for me. Cheers, Horatia
