Hi I'm currently hitting a brick wall researching my family tree. I know the following information about him.... Born 15th May 1820 in Plessey[1], Newcastle, Northumberland, England. Married Mary Holder Oxx 15th May 1842. The marriage is registered as being in Newcastle on Tyne district, Northumberland. The church married at is All Saints Church. In 1854 his registered address was Rostock Terrace, Middlesbrough. In 1877 he was living at 43 Guerney Street Darlington His daughter Frances birth and marriage certificates have Robert Robson working as a Roll Turner (which we should be able to safely assume at the Rise Carr Rolling Mills) The 1881 census has him as a 61 year old widow living with his daughter Hannah (now Bulmer) and her husband James at 40 Henry St, Darlington and 2 grandchildren working as a mechanic at engine works. His exact death is unknown, however, it is possible he died in Darlington in June 1884, aged 64. Children see below. I have bought his marriage certificate to find clues but so far all I can find out is his fathers name is John Robson - no more details apart from a very common name. Can anyone give me any advice on what to do next to trace him? Is there anyway of getting birth certificates from 1820? If so where... Thanks in advance, Jon PS. Sorry - paragraphs don't seem to be working!

Its sometimes helpful to look on the census page to see if there are any other Robson's living on th same street.................... Also look on the page before and the page after on the census sheets. I have found children living next door to their parents. and even found the inlaws too.

Jonathon I'm happy to look at this for you, but need some more info. Where did you get Robert's marriage? You can't get certs for per 1837 for his birth. When and where were Frances and Hannah born? Were there other children. It is just that Robert Robson is such a common name. I found some with a daugther Frances born Germany, and others with Hannah, but there are lots of other children. Would they have had a servant? I found one of those as well. Email me direct if it is easier Could you put it in paragraghs. It's just very hard to read all together. Have alook at some other threads and you will see we put See Below in the first message, then type a reply to it with the details and you can get paragraghs.

Where did you get an exact date of birth for him? You will need to try and find his baptism, which should give you his mum's first name. (start praying for her to be Esmerelda or Ermintrude and not Mary or Eliza!!!) Merry

Don't forget to check for mis-spellings like Robeson, Rebson, Rowson, Rolson, Ronson, Royson or Robbson.

This looks like him with his mother and siblings in 1841, his occupation is Roll Turner. You would need to search parish records for LongBenton Jennifer Source information: HO107/822/5 Registration district: Tynemouth Sub-registration district: Long Benton ED, institution, or vessel: 11 Folio: 4 Page: 1 George Robson abt 1825 Northumberland, England Long Benton Northumberland Isabella Robson abt 1832 Northumberland, England Long Benton Northumberland Jane Robson abt 1798 Northumberland, England Long Benton Northumberland Jane Robson abt 1830 Northumberland, England Long Benton Northumberland John Robson abt 1822 Northumberland, England Long Benton Northumberland Robert Robson abt 1820 Northumberland, England Long Benton Northumberland William Robson abt 1835 Northumberland, England Long Benton Northumberland

Thanks very much for your help so far! Luckily Robert Robson married in 1842 so I was able to get a marriage certificate from the Newcastle registry office. I've got an online family tree with lots of details - please contact me if you want to view it. But children are: John George Robson (1843 - 1923) - he has descendants and married Martha Lyall William Isaac ROBSON (1845 - ) - no trace of any descendants Harriett Jane ROBSON (c 1846 - ) - no known descendants Hannah Mary Augusta ROBSON (1849 - ) - married James Bulmer Robert Amos Robson (1851 - ) - no known descendants Frances Isabella Woodhouse ROBSON (1854 - 1943) descedants (married Thomas Bellwood) Jennifer - where did you find that information!? It looks promising!

The marriage cert - it gives dads name as John but what occupation?

Jonathan Report 2 Jul 2006 11:43

No occupation. Could this mean he was dead? As it is possible we have found a match however the mother is living alone...
