THE HOLY BIBLE. Bookseller: Corran Books Ltd (Carmarthenshire West Wales, WA, United Kingdom) Price: £ 50.00 [Convert Currency] Shipping within United Kingdom: £ 3.35 [Rates & Speeds] Add Book to Shopping Basket Book Description: London. George Eyre and Andrew Spottiswoode for the British and Foreign Bible Society. 1837., 1837. Original leather-bound family bible. Both Old and New Testaments. 225mmx140mm. Not paginated. The interest here lies in the five pages of family records, beginning on the inside cover & recording births, marriages and deaths within the CAMPBELL, LEWIS and BOWEN families in Rhymney, Aberdare, Merthyr Tydfil, Penydarren and Cefn. Many family details are recorded - the times of death & the cause, where they were buried or married, together with ages, and unusual extra information. One old lady died of apoplexy. A man with a very shaky hand working at the Rhymney Gas Works promised on his Bible to abstain from all intoxicating drinks with effect from 9th April 1894. Loosely inserted is an anthem printed by Evans of Merthyr, 'Remember the Creator'. The spine is worn and damaged, but the covers are Good. The bible has clearly passed through many hands, but this is the very stuff of 19th Century life in the Welsh Valleys and we suspect this Bible should be on display in a museum.
