Ugborough Devon 1727

I have just been surfing Ebay, and there is a rental for a manor in Ugborough, Devon, in 1727. If you had rellies there at that time, they could be listed, and the photo is a good size. The image is clear (though rather hard to read because of the old writing), and will be there to look at for a short while. Item no. 170001358178 if you are interested. A bit pricey to buy though!

Ooooooooooooooh. Must see if I can find EBay. Is Beenleigh on there, or Crabaton? Biting nails in excitement!

Gosh, thanks for that. No direct ancestors, so I'll not be bidding, but two rellies on it.

That's great Phoenix, did you make a note of the manor name? Probably the court rolls are in a RO somewhere, Devon RO would probably know, or maybe even have them there. If your rellies were copyhold tenants you might be able to trace them for several generations, or they may have been fined for some manorial offence, such as having a blocked ditch.

How can you get the images bigger than postage-stamp? I can't get the images large enough to discern names. Christine

Christine, I'm not sure if one can download the images, but they are large as life on the screen when you go to the main entry. Did you type the item number in the search box?

Yes, I used the number and then I also tried following the link to the e-bay shop - where there are lots more intriguing items. I've tried opening the image in another window, as well - and using different browsers. It may be a Mac effect. I'll see if I can persuade my husband to have a go at the problem - Ugborough is part of his heritage, after all, not mine! If the worst comes to the worst, I'll have to see if I can get my bro-i-law to have a look. He uses e-Bay a lot, so it might be easier that way anyway - except that genealogy isn't his interest, really! thanks Christine

Perhaps one of you who can get readable images can tell me if there are any GOULDs on the list? Christine

I can't spot any Christine, but perhaps somebody more used to the old writing may have better luck? It's a long time since I looked at any eighteenth century records! Yes it's a very interesting bit of Ebay, and that seller is particularly good at giving you an idea of the names involved in his documents for sale. Some sellers just tell you the place and date - fine for local historians but not much help for genealogists.

In my excitement, I had forgotten to note the name. Good thinking, Roger.

I can't see any Goulds (the image appears to be about 1/3 lifesize) but it's not exactly focussed - and it took me ages to realise I should scroll down to see it.

Thank you, Phoenix. The wonders of scrolling! I was assuming that clicking on the small image would give a link to a bigger image, but kept getting teh sales info, of course. cheers Christine

I'd already found the seller's eBay shop - along with this one, for instance: PLYMPTON, UGBOROUGH: Copy of the last Will and Testament of Ellen Strode of Plympton, Devon, originally dated 2 March 1667, the copy dated 1670, relating in part to lands in Ugborough, Devon. She also bequeathes several sums of money to the poor of Plympton and Ugborough. *** It's currently going for £20 with another 11:28hrs to go. Christine
