I've been trying to trace my gggf for months but the surname spelling can be so different - I've run out of ideas 1891 head:John HORWELL b1846 Ilsington, devon - Gamekeeper wife:Elizabeth HORWELL b 1848 Bigbury, devon dau:Mary b1868 Ilsington dau:Emily b1882 Ilsington son:Alfred b1884 Ilsington dau:Bertha b1888 Ilsington 1881 head:John HORWILL b1846 Ilsington - Gamekeeper wife:Eliza HORWILL b1848 Bigbury dau:Mary b1868 Ilsington son:Frederick b1873 Ilsington .........my ggf ! son:William b1869 Ilsington John Horwell & Elizabeth Powell married in 1866 (I've just sent off for the cert) Their 1881 census children make sense; then they stop for 9 years & then have Emily, Alfred & Bertha who are on the 1891. I cant find Frederick on the 1891 at all. (Full name: Frederick James Powell Horwell) & I can't find any of the blighters at all on 1871 ! I've seen the name spelt many ways (I won't influence anyone if I don't put them all down!) - just think 'Devon accent' Thanks in advance to anyone that spares a moment to have a look for me... Sarah :-) |

So Sarah, are their correct names Powell? Do you think the first wife may have died and he married again? |

Sorry Heather I'll change my posting it's John HORWELL married Elizabeth POWELL so the family is Horwell (or variations thereof!) Sarah :-) About the wife dying - I thought it must be but I don't think it's likely as she's still Elizabeth born 1848 Bigbury (what are the odds of that!?) |

I've been fiddling about with the Crediton James for a while now not sure if it was him - I think he must have had another wife though - Mary Ann would have been 10 when she had Susan !! Food for thought - Thanks a mill, Jess & Reg Any luck with ggf Fred on the 1891 ? Sarah :-) |
