When was their eldest child born and where? Could it be a second marriage for Charlotte?

Why can't I find the marriage between my gt grandmother Emma Matthews and her 2nd husband John Garvie, which should have taken place between May 1879 when her first husband died and Mar 1881 when she and John are living as a married couple on the census? Possibilities a) they never married b) they married but the marriage is mistranscribed in the index c) they married but the copy of the cert got lost before it reached the GRO nell

I only checked one Quarter!!!!! 1853 Q4 West London 1c 181 George Rixon Charlotte Boddington You didn't say if this is the one you asked for, but I find it hard to believe it isn't them! Did you actually get the cert, or ask for it with checking points? Merry

hi all, sorry for the delay, have just trawled through all the censuses, from 41 upto 1901. charlottes name changed between 1851 and the 1861 census. I have the eldest child as 4yrs old in 1861. so I think if she was married it has to be about 1856/57. the marriage certificate I ordered for her, I asked them to check her fathers name and it wasnt the right one on the 1853 certificate for west london. thanks for the help. jean

Jean, I dont know if you saw my thread yesterday about not discarding certs cos of wrong names? I have two boys whose father died in 1838 when one was 6 and the other 2. The eldest was called William Thomas. Dads name was Thomas Michael. Both boys gave their fathers name as William Thomas. I can only assume someone at some time told the elder boy he was named after dad (Thomas) and throughout his life he believed dad must have been William Thomas and told his little bro that. I wouldnt discard that marriage - is it the right place for them? They arent common names.

Lost here - how do you know who her father was? OC

hi heather, dont think the west london one was right for them, they were both born and lived in bucks. seems a bit far to go to get married. oc, I have charlotte fathers name as henry on both the 1841 and 51 census. well, I would hope it is her father, now you'r confusing me. ;) jean

Guess its unlikely then. They werent both in service at the time which would be a reason for them being in London?

AS the 1841 doesnt give relationships generally, he could very easily be her stepfather or just another male relative in the house. More likely to be her stepfather, if he is still there in 1851. But on the occasion of her marriage, she gives the name of her REAL father. I think the marriage above is very probably the right one, there arent many Charlotte Boddingtons about, I wouldnt have thought. Another thought - the GRO are sticklers for matching EXACTLY your checking points - if you said her father should be Henry, and she had called him Harry, then they wont send you the cert. OC

Have to say that I'm with OC on this, and as a matter of general principle I wouldn't use checking points. If you state that father's name was Charles Robert and it says Robert Charles, they'll say it is the wrong certificate. As for a couple marrying in London, plenty of young people worked in London as servants, then returned home to live. I'd definitely get the certificate, from curiosity if nothing else.

I think you should take a chace and buy the cert. I hate checking points with the GRO because they are so inflexible (probably because people would moan if they WERE flexible!!!). When you look at how rare both their names are, it seems incredible that two people with these names married roughly the same day and at the same place but not to each other! There are only 7 Charlotte Boddington marriage entries on the whole of FreeBMD!! So, allowing for missing years means there were probably only 10 marriages 1837-1900. There are only 50+ George Rixons which is also a tiny number! Merry

Jean Just to confirm others' points - My husband had a Jewish gt gt grandfather called Zusman Hart. [You'd be amazed what Zusman can be recorded as, but that's another story] Anyway, I got his marriage and his father was named as Zalig. Found a correct-looking birth cert ref in the index - only Zuzman recorded in the relevant years, and in Whitechapel which was right area. When I got it I was flabbergasted to find father's name was Solomon. Mystery cleared up when I found in the death indexes a Solomon Zalig Hart. If I'd put Zalig as a checking point I wouldn't have got the birth cert. nell

If the seven quid isnt going to break you, Id go for it. Ten years is a long time - if they were in Bucks, which actually is pretty close to London - in 1851, they could very easily both gone to London in service, married and then returned to Bucks by 1861. If the kiddie was shown born Bucks it could very well be that Charlotte went home to mum for the confinement. Get the cert if you can, and check the dads occupations and Georges dads name - if 3 out of 4 match ............ She may have lost her dad when she was young and his name has become confused in her mind, dad may use a second name in every day life cos he doesnt like his given name - no end of possibilities. Re the apparent 4 years before first baby (although I guess this could be less if they married last quarter of 53 and if you count 9 months pregnancy). It may well be she lost a child before this one? (Just noticed you said George was from Berks and Charlotte Bucks - I would have thought if so, then even more likely they could meet up in London?)
