I thought tartan was only for Highland clans, not anyone who is Scottish, but I might be wrong. nell

The name Ireland is going to be a problem, as the Irish have their own tartans - in fact they had them first. There are lots of sites with clan names - just google clan tartans. Ive looked but Ireland is not a name that is attached to a clan tartan. You could have a look by googling though.

Yes the Scots have tartans, but many surnames come under one tartan. My Scottish side were called Craig, but came under the MacDonald Clan tartan. You should realise that tartans and clans were 'made up' by a famous Scottish Author whose name escapes me LOL! (Sorry, short term memory loss problem) and didnt exist before about 1750. Try googling Scottish Plaids. ??Was it Sir Walter Scott, for the Waverley Novels??? OC

Ozibird Thankyou for that, you put it far better than I did and far more accurately, too! Sir Walter Scott was the first AUTHOR to mention clan tartans in a way that suggested it was national dress for everyone, and this is probably where the trend for tartans started. The Cornish also have a tartan, but it isnt clan, and I believe the WElsh do, too. OC
