I have been interested to discover that none of my ancestors ever seemed to marry a random stranger, and that I can link various branches of the family in all kinds of ways. Whether they KNEW of the family connection though, is another thing. But I think possibly they did, family ties seemed to be much stronger and wider reaching then than they are now and the family 'network' covered moves to far distant counties. Even servants usually turn out to be distantly related. And my mysterious 2 x GGF died miles from home with what appear to be strangers in a lodging house. But they turned out to be family related through marriage, although it was a very complicated relationship! OC |

Well its funny, because I said yesterday before I went, what if I find this marriage and he marries a Davenport or a Stillman, and who does he marry, Elizabeth Davenport! Laura -I bet there will be a connection somewhere - I have people living it little parishes and you can conect most of them up together if you g back far enough. |

Elly, thats what I mean, the families hadn't anything to do with each other than (as in they weren;t marrying cousins - although I do have that on another line) The funny thing i that both my Mum and Dad have common ancestors and she grew up in Yorkshire, him in Essex. |

Hi Tom It's common for families to be inter-related years ago as people didn't move around like they do today, but I would guess your circumstances quite unique?? Elly |

Just thought that I'd share this with everyone. Went to Leicester archives to day. I have two branches from there, my g g g grandma on my mothers side and my g g g grandad on my fathers side. Turns out that my maternal grandmother and paternal grandfather are actually related and have the same g g g grandparents. (Found a marriage on maternal grandmother's side and coupled with census info was able to find a baptism) Funny when you think about it because one group moved down south, the other up north and then never saw each other until my parents met.*********Does that make sense? lol. |
