Loren If the father's name is not shown on the register (sometimes it is pencilled in or added later - IGI will not transcribe this information so you need to see the original) then try looking for Bastardy Orders, or Orders of Affiliation. A2A is a good source of these, or failing that, they should be in the County Records Office, in the Poor Law papers. In my experience these were usually taken out within a few weeks of birth. OC |

Loren, in all probability it just means she was 'illegitimate'. In most cases where a child was illegitimate the father was not named on the baptism record (though there are exceptions, of course). Kate. |

As Jane had the same surname as the mother that would usually mean she was illegitimate. Have you tried the IGI for an Ann Pike 15-20 years earlier in the same area? |

Hi all, I have found my great grandmother x 3 on IGI Jane Pike bith 20 Jan 1801 Christening 04 Feb 1801 Beddinghton Surrey Parents Ann Pike There is no father named would that mean father unknown? Thankyou Loren. |
