Hi Tiger-Lily – Despite the fact that I live in Canada, I know very little about Canadian genealogical resources (my heritage is English and Irish). However, I do know that BMD registration is a provincial responsibility, and to the best of my knowledge there is no national index. Ancestry does have the Ontario Death Index for 1869 - 1932 and the British Columbia Death Index for 1872 - 1979. If your relative died in either of these provinces, you are likely to find him. I just did a quick free search (which gives you the name and year of death (and county for Ontario) and there are a few William Kirbys who died in the 1926 - 1928 time frame. Rather than buying an International Membership, why don’t you purchase pay-per-view (PPV) credits? These cost CDN$5.95 (roughly £3) for 10 page views and are good for 14 days. I’m not sure if you can purchase them through Ancestry(.)co(.)uk or not, but you definitely can through Ancestry(.)ca. I don’t know if any other provinces (Alberta, Sakatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, or Prince Edward Island – Newfoundland was not part of Canada until 1949) have online indices or not, but you can always try Googling to find out. In the meantime, however, the Ancestry PPV route seems relatively simple. Good luck – Tim

I asked about this man before, but have gleaned more info since then, although it is still very little to go on. I am looking for the death of my granddad’s brother, William Kirby, born about 1897 in Lambeth, London. I am told that he died as a young man in Canada (don’t know where). He was certainly dead by 1928 and his body was brought home for burial. I have trawled through Ancestry quarter by quarter and a couple of times now, although it wouldn’t be the first time I have missed what I am looking for. Would the fact that he actually died in Canada be blocking my search? Any help would be most gratefully appreciated. TGx
