Told me where the family name of Brandon originated. I have lost this contact but I'm sure it was somewhere like Bedfordshire............I'm certain it began with 'B'. Would anyone else happen to know please............just out of curiosity? Jen

You could google, but I imagine lots of surnames originated as placenames. There's a Brandon in Suffolk.

Thanks Helen, I did think about the Brandon in Suffolk but I know the info I had given me was either Berkshire or it may have been Buckinghamshire.......... I'll try and have a scout around by googling tomorrow, brains not up to it tonight. Jen

Oxford names Companion gives English habitation name from any of various places so called, found in Co Durham, Northumberland, Norfolk, Suffolk, Warwicks and elsewhere. Most get the namne from the OE brom (broom/gorse) + dun (hill). One in Lincs from the River Brant on which it stands. Nothing in the Atlas for any county begining with B :-) Keith

Thankyou Keith, maybe I got my wires crossed, we were discussing several issues at the time and it was almost a year ago...just wish I had made a proper note of it........that was my inexperience showing at the time........know better now lol! That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it anyway! Jen

Ken Milton did a thread on the population spread of names c1881. It was called 'where did they come from' He put a hold on the thread some time ago. perhaps if you ask him nicely he will look it up for you??!! Kat:)
