Does anyone know where to apply or search for a will for someone who died in Edinburgh in 1942 and who definitely left a will. Susan |

Hi Susan, there is a will section on Scotlands People, pay view site. Not sure what dates though. Think you can do a search 1st. Hilary. |

I don't know how to go about it either, but if you can find out who the likely executor was, ie family solicitor or next of kin, then that is one way to try. Regards JJH |

Hilary, the wills index on SP only goes up to 1901. JJH |

Hi Hilary and Yogi I know about the Scotlands People site but the section on Wills does not go up to 1942. I think Wills can be searched at the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh but the web site is not very helpful. Susan |

Hi Lyla Many thanks for the information - I know exactly when my relative died so does this mean I can search for the information under the Calender of Confirmations at the Scottish Archives. I am off to Edinburgh soon but my time will be limited and wanted to find out as much information beforehand. Susan |

Hi Lyla As always you have been very helpful and I will now contact the Scottish National Archives before going to Edinburgh - I am searching for my Great Great Aunt's will which I hope will have details of family members. I have found wills to be so helpful in the past in fact finding my Great Grandfather's will is what started me off on this Family Tree search in the first place. Many thanks Susan |

Hi Just in case anyone else needs this information: If Confirmation has been issued in an estate prior to 1/1/1996 then the records will be held at the National Archives of Scotland, HM Register House, 2 Princes Street, Edinburgh EH1 3YY. Please remember that Confirmation of an estate is not always required & may not actually be applied for until many years after the death. Caroline |
