Christine, sorry, but how are you sure the 1901 boy is the right one please? And does he have any middle name? Does his dad have a middle name? On the 1908 marriage cert was William a marine? Re the Butler Reggie kindly found - you just enter the info for him in a census search - do you have ancestry? Oh I see, you mean though married he is on his own in the census - in service I guess. Well, on the 1891 you could enter the details that are shown on the 1901 re his birth year, place of birth etc. Re National Archives documents on line - just google it - they have some service info - Im never sure if a Marine is army or navy (I shall get shot for that shant I?) but I believe is navy. Ive entered William Smith born Camberwell into the search and the only possible one that came up - all the others were too early, was this: Description Name Smith, William James Official Number: L13940 Place of Birth: Camberwell, London Date 15 April 1902 Catalogue reference ADM 188/1015 Do you know if William had a second name?

Reg It seems the one from Dorset is the favourite as Grandad William was training in the Marines aboard the 'Agincourt' according to the 1901 census. As it states that John Smith (Butler) was married, how do I find his family? Sorry to be a pain, relative newbie !!!

Oh dear, William and John Smith! In the 1901 what was his place of birth? Did it say born 1885? He would only be 16 and in the marines? Have you looked at NA records?

Grandfathers name please .... Elaine ;-) Have you searched through all the Birth indexes looking for possible's ? Have you checked the 1891 census to see if he was still at home with parents ?? Where did he get married ... and what address did he give on the marriage cert ? ... is his age at marriage consistent with being born in 1885 ?
