Isn't it annoying when the Vicar enters in the Parish registers the burial of Widow Twankey. Just because he knows who she was is no help to me in hunting through all the Twankeys in the village to see which one had been careless enough to lose her husband.

Early Penkridge registers are like that, sometimes the poor old dear doesnt even get a name, just relic of Joseph Smith or the like. Some births are the same, only gives the fathers name, s*d the woman who's just delivered the child. Oh, to go back and teach them about equality, it would help my research. Ellen X

At least that gives a surname. What about Servant of John Brown buried. His name might have been William Green. Okay, not your ancestor, since he was probably unmarried (and male!) but he might have been first cousin to your ancestor, enabling you to eliminate a red herring.

in the swanscombe registers there are quite a few 'unknown man found drowned in the River' some poor woman probably several miles up river (or even in Essex) must have been wondering what happened to her hubby
