An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 28 Jun 2006 22:12

I have a series of Removal Orders for the woman I suspect is my 3 x GGM. She bounced back and forth between two parishes for years. It was only when the Union Workhouse law came into effect, 1835(?) that a bit of commonsense came into the proceedings - a family would be allowed to stay where they were, as long as their Parish of Settlement agreed to foot the bill - in practise though, this meant that people could move freely about the country for the first time in history. And their mine!!!!!! how exciting Tom! If that copy was held in Shropshire, I wonder if there are any other documents in the Parish of St Werburgh, Chester. Deb

Tom Worth investigating. I found my gt X 3 grandfather Robert Chowns and his wife and 3 daughters were 'removed and conveyed' from Stoke Poges in Bucks to Aston Rowant in Oxon, where Robt had been born. Aston Rowant and Stoke Poges had a dispute about this and it went to the magistrates. I found the quarter sessions records which included Robt's statement about his income and circumstances. He and his family had lived with his father in law in Farnham Royal but moved when the ceiling fell in(!) to Stoke Poges. The magistrates decided the family could stay in Stoke P. and they did. Robt lived over 20 years in a privately-endowed almshouse and died at the age of 93 in 1872. nell

Tom Dont you think they were a bit harsh? To move a family of 7 or more back to a parish from where they came, it would mean housing, clothing and feeding them.Perhaps the original parish just offered to pay and let them stay where they were. Pauline

I was just thinking that, but they must have come back, or never gone in the first place because they were buried in Lilleshall.

Tom They would have only been a problem when they needed to make demands on the parish relief Pauline

I know Pauline, I;m not a Colwood, but it was my maternal Grandma's maiden name and I have spent a lot of time researching them, and to find this is great - and looking on the IGI it goes back a long way. (will need to be thoroughly checked though) What I don;t get though is ow they managed to live there for so long before being sent away!?!

Its funny how every little thing that has managed to survive and we manage to unearth is really exciting. My favourites are a couple of old wills 17th and early 18th century and a very old court case dated 1579! Pauline
