Val, didnt you see my thread the other day, I paid out me £8.50 for what I thought was a full court case of my criminal ancestor but it was only the sentencing of him and the notes from the Governor of Holloway prison saying how do I treat these two. I was dead disappointed, no juicy details of the case at all. I would much have preferred Georgettes lovely find.

I was really excited when I realised it was a letter written by him. He would have been about 20 when he wrote it and I can just imagine him sitting at a little wooden desk in a dark cramped rocking ship trying to write neatly and clearly. The bit I like best is when he assures the man he's writing to that he will come back to the Navy after his training - he didn't he joined the army :o)

I typed in one of my ancestors, Robinson Ayton, and up came his name plus the name of the document. The title didn't give me much of a clue as to what the document was, but it turned out to be a letter written by him in 1798, asking to be discharged from the Navy to go to London to train as a surgeon. I've just tried their Digital Express service which is on trial at the moment. I ordered a copy of a document in their catalogue late last night, and it arrived by email this afternoon. It costs £8.50 for the 24hr service. I'm very impressed :o)
