A branch of my husband's family have the surname MELLOR. We have his grandmother's birth cert and her 3 FORENAMES are Martha Hannah McQuorne, and the same on her marriage cert. I searched and searched for her father and grandfather - alledgedly James Henry McQuorne Mellor and David Mellor. I eventually found them as David and James McQuone. (Note the difference and say 'McQuorne' and 'McQuone' with a Manchester accent!) Why they changed their name is anybodies guess. Since they don't appear to have been able to write they might have thought Mellor was easier??! LOL They did it to tease us! Anne |

Just got to find where he changed his name legally; if at all, as he moved about all over the place. What amazes me is why they pick the names they choose and for what reason. It would be amazing to find out....GOD its so addictive...x |

Sometimes people changed their names to meet inheritance requirements - or because of family feuds. Christine |

I've no idea, but my great grandparents were called Anderson, but for some unknown reason in 1871 they appear on the census with the surname Humble and baptised my grandfather with the surname Humble, although he was brought up with the surname Anderson. I can only think that as great grandfather was unemployed in the 1871 census (when the name changed) they might have done a 'moonlight flit' from somewhere and didn't want to be found. Can't think of any other reason. Kath. x |

I am struggling to find a connection between Rendle and Wilson surnames in my tree. Now there has been rumours around for a long time in my family that Rendle was the original surname and that for some suspicious reason he changed his name to Wilson. I thought it was just one of those stories that lead to nowhere or not true and I presumed I would find that it would the maiden name of the mother; but as yet it hasn't appeared. It shows on the earlier census' that it was Wilson but from 1881 the Rendle comes back and now the surname is Rendle-Wilson. I have gone back to William Wilson born c1823 Kingston Surrey and I think it might be him that changed the name as I didn't think it was that far back. How can I find out? has anyone got any clues.
