Can anyone tell me if this site is worth subscribing to? Aren't BDMs free anyway or have I missed something vital!

1837online was the best site to use for BMD's before Ancestry put them on their site for free. Now it is still worth having a few credits for 1837online, for the odd quarters that are missing on Ancestry, but it depends on what the offer actually is, as to whether it is good value or not. Kath. x

actually I was wondering when my Ancestry runs out, 3 years at £125 seems very reasonable to me ,or am I missing something ???

Ancestry bmd's are FREE...............you don't have to subscribe to access the records; you only have to register. Where 1837 does score is with its facility to do address searches on 1861 and 1891 censuses. Reg

But you won't get all the other stuff Ancestry has Valerie. What would you do without all the census records. As I say, I still use 1837, but whereas I used to spend £25 at a time (and I've spent hundreds of pounds on the site), now I just buy a few pounds worth at a time in case i need them - and I haven't needed to use the site in ages now. I keep getting their offers cos I used the site before i subscribed to ancestry. I think they are getting desperate now cos they have lost many subscribers. to be honest i think they are on the downward path cos ancestry offers so much more for the money. I spent lots of money on 1837 just looking at qrts that just didnt contain what i was looking for.

I do the address searches on 1861 and 1891 census on 1837online and then look up the household on Ancestry instead (to save 30p) - lol, I must be crazy!!!!! No responses to that last but, please! Merry

i noticed in the terms and conditions for the unlimited offer, you are expressley forbiden to do look ups for other people, so i guess when they notice you are doing lots of unrelated names they will twig what you are doing and stop your account, they lead you to these terms before signing up and say do not subscribe if you want to do look ups for other people, so i guess you could end up loseing your money. 1837 terms Eligibility This subscription service is made available for personal use only. Third-party lookups, where data is searched for on behalf of another person and the results passed on to that person, whether for payment or gratis, are not permitted except in the context of passing on details of the subscriber's own personal family history. If you intend to use our services for any of the excluded purposes you should not take out a subscription, even if you have received our invitation to subscribe. You may not allow your login and password to be passed on to anyone other than the account holder for usage.

1837 offered me 12 months unlimited access for £50.00 just before I found out that Ancestry allow the BMD searches for free. I signed up with 1837. This weekend 1837 offered 12 months unlimited access to the 1861 and 1891 census - for just £10.00, with the promise that this would be extended to give access to two other census years when they are available 'in the Autumn'. This sounds like a real good deal. Steve
