You lot who think you're having a hard time with Sutcliffes, would you like to try Joneses instead?

I had a great one Tom.......my 3xg grandfather was illigitimate and in the parish records it's states the Mother was 'living a bad life' I did know who his father was though, she gave him his father's surname as a middle name and they went onto marry anyway. Deb P.s Well, I hope that's his father!!! LOL

I know - I have had no luck whatsover with them in Lancashire. I know that Joseph Sutcliffe (born c 1826 Manchester) married in Wakefield in 1849 and was the so of Joseph Sutcliffe, but apart from that I know nothing about him - cannot find a baptism or find him in 1841. :-(

Not too far away - my lot are from the Soyland area of Halifax - hope you have more luck with Sutcliffe research that I have - they only seem to call their sons by three names, Willliam, John or Robert - like looking for a needle in a haystack Carole

Not that I know of Carole, my Sutcliffes are all from Wakefield, but moved here from Lancashire around 1845.

I have a case like that where I recently discovered that, after abandoning my g granddad, gg grandma went off and had another illegitimate baby - but doubt that even if there is mention of the father's name somewhere , I can count on it being the same one as for g grandad. BTW, this line married into the Sutcliffe family -lol. Don't have any 'Hoyle' genes do you? Carole

1878 Merry, was a bit shocked myself. Had a bit of a look for the Dad, and looks as if he was twice her age, unmarried and still living at home with his Dad - not the man she married! It does make me wonder though, on the cert she is down as Rosetta Sutcliffe, Dressmaker, and from what I have read on some of the threads, dressmaker can be a euphamism for a Lady of the Night, guess I'll never know - can;t see any other illigitimate births though. lol.

Well done!! What date was this then?? Sounds like it would be more recent than usual? Merry

My great aunt remembered an Auntie Sarah, but I had no idea who she was talking about. After much searching I found that my g granny had a baby before she got married, so I bought the burth cert and there was no mention of a father. I didn't think there would be as the other illigitimate ones I have do not mention the Father, but low and behold, I found her baptism on familyhistoryonline, and it gives the name of her father!*************Will have to look at the original entry to see how it describes the mother, I've seen lots of different descriptions of children and mothers in parish records. Just thought I';d share, and let people know that just because the father isn't on the birth cert doesn;t mean he won;t be on the baptism.
