I think his brother was living with them in 1881 census as there was a Leon Ceulebroeck as well. It is the only time that I have any siblings so i s'pose he went back to Belgium,. Just had a thought...did he go to US. Something else to check out.

Perhaps decency prevented them from telling the truth, the 'taboo' of the age difference may have been a factor. Glen

It wasn't unusual for people to tell porkies about their age when there was a big difference between them.

I can see the age might be a mistake but I wonder if they felt the age gap was quite large as he gained 5 years. He lost them pdq when he married my g grandmother who was much younger than him!

The only thing that I can think of is that perhaps Sarah had been left the house or some other property by her first husband on the condition that she did not remarry, so used her previous name on the census. The age of 49 in 1891 might just be a mistake and should be 59.

1875 Adolphus van Ceulebroeck(and no, it's rarely transcribed accurately) married sarah Mills (widow) in Chelsea.Occ painter He was 24 and she 44. All this is on the cert. 1881 census Adolph Ceulebroeck (29)-born Ghent Belgium- was living as a lodger with Sarah Mills(50) a widow and head of household. born Lincoln. 1891 census Adolph Ceulebroeck is 43-but he loses these 5 years in 1901 when he marries a younger person! is living with Sarah Ceulebroeck age 49 born Lincoln. However, she was 60 when she died in1892. Sorry for so much waffle. The age discrepancy was prob because of their age difference but WHY was he lodging with the woman he married and she used her widowed name??
