Ah, the old cartwheel pennies from 1797 (that was the only date they were ever minted). They were produced by the zillion since no small change had been minted for thirty years or so and there was a big shortage. There was a twopenny piece as well, you wouldn't have wanted a pocket full of these, they were HUGE. Bear in mind that my knowledge is a bit out of date, but I doubt if they're that valuable unless they're in very good condition since so many were made. You could always ask a coin dealer but don't expect to be able to pay off your mortgage! Andrew.

my gran gave my son a box of old coins my dad had collected. there are some paper thin silver threepenny coins - wonder how many times they were in the christmas pud! also a huge heavy penny with a different coloured edge and 1797 on it. A few of those in your pocket would make a hole! It has George 111 on it. Is that anything special Andrew? netti

Gosh, this is spookey !!!! Over the past few days, I have been trying to go through all my scribbley notes on bits of paper (I know you all have similar piles hidden away in the 'to sort' folder) Anyway, one one bit it said '1933 Penny - George V - VERY rare !!' - I don't know why I made a note of this, or where the info came from BUT I dutifully re-copied it, along with other 'useless' information on to a bigger, tidier piece of paper and filed it away again. (I can never bring myself to throw any notes away, 'coz I KNOW I will need them one day!) Thankfully, I know I am not alone. Dea P.S. - You said your penny is 1946 - Does that mean my 'useless info' is REALLY useless as I have the date wrong? OOOppss - Just read the rest of the thread - looks like my info might be worth keeping then - though 'what for?', I can't imagine. Dea x

Most pre-decimal coins are only worth a few pence unless they're in mint condition, though some dates are really rare and therefore valuable (1933 pennies were being auctioned for several thousand pounds as early as the seventies). The letter on the 1909 pennies was an H (or sometimes a KN)next to the date. It wasn't just that date, but several around that time. They weren't that rare, I remember getting one in my change as a kid (I used to collect coins which is why I know this stuff). I doubt if any of them were worth a fortune though I suppose some of the date/letter combinations were worth a bit. BTW, the H stood for Heaton and the KN for Kings Norton, two temporary mints that were set up and made pennies for a few years around this time, I don't know why. Andrew.

I wonder what my sixpences are worth now then! I have about 8 of them all mounted into a siver bracelet (the coins are unharmed) all pre Elizabeth II if memory serves. Mam also has a collection of comemarative coins her grandmother sent he as a child (similar to our £5 coins), I'm sure there worth a bob or two now.
