Found these (which probably overlap with two on the GRO index) using the BMD multi-search page: Surname First Name(s) Year District Region Registers At Reference WILLIAMS John Ernest 1897 Wrexham North Wales Wrexham C.B. WM/100/80 WILLIAMS John Ernest 1898 Tranmere Cheshire Wirral TRA/70/98 Christine

Totally echo what christine has said, I have a g grandmother who was Clara Florence on her birth cert, Florence on her marriage cert and Clare florence on her death Cert. also a William Henry Reed, who is William Henry on his daughters birth cert and just Henry on her marriage cert. Try a combination of the names, concentrate more on getting the right area and age right. Good Luck Fuzzy x

Rosie, if you have his marriage certificate it should give you his father's name and occupation. Then you can search for the family on the 1901 census and that should tell you where he was born. Well, that is the theory but it is sometimes easier said than done! Perhaps he is one of these: Births Jun 1897 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Williams John Ernest Wrexham 11b 289 Williams John Ernest Staines 3a 6 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Sep 1897 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Williams John Ernest Abergavenny 11a 44a -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Dec 1897 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Williams John Ernest W. Derby 8b 527 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Mar 1898 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Williams John Ernest Birkenhead 8a 534 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kate.

Did John marry? If you know his father's name you just may be able to find them on 1901 census. I would go for a marriage cert. first, then use that information to narrow down the search for the birth cert. Gwyn

there are just too many john williams i have not got a clue where he was born only that it was 1898 and the only one i can find is in birkenhead which i think is liverpool and im sure thats not the one oh dear perhaps i could just order that one and if its wrong then i will have to order all the john williams lol i know what you mean about name changing i always thought his name was jack never found him , then my mum told me his name was john and they called him jack. its all to confusing for me thanks alot Rosex

It's likely to be the same as his death-cert name, but there are other possibilities: 1] Just the first name (as you suggest) 2] The same names, but the other way round 3] Something else altogether if he changed his name sometime (sorry about that one, but it is a remote possibility.) [My grandmother was registered Alice, called herself Harris for some of the time, and was Roma Alice by the time her death was registered.] Also - whatever DoB appears on his death cert is only only as reliable as the informant's information at the time - in fact that's true of any and all info on the cert. How long is a piece of string!! I would look for a birth cert in the area you think he was born and hope for the best. Sometimes people added another nams after they were registerd or baptised
