It could be that maybe someone got annoyed with him and hecstopped seeing the family. If times were tough then maybe there was an argument over money. Could someone answer a question for me? How do you check when the age pension ceased? Can it be done on line? Thanks Toni |

Merry how awful, we complain about our standards of care these days but, it was so much harder for them and yet, they must have been so greatful to have a bed to lie in.............it doesn't bear thinking about really. This has really upset me now because I only had two uncles and Arthur was my favourite....as a child I really loved him and he looked so much like dad too! I can't bear to think about what might have happened to him now. I think I will have to put it to one side for now..........I can't believe nothing was said about Arthur as we got older? when we could have understood!............Now it's too late to ask anyone that might have known something!!! Maybe nothing was said to you when he ''disappeared'', because he had to be put in an institution and this was more difficult to tell you than if he had died? Maybe he was there for years? My g-grandmother was placed in a private asylum when she had a temporary mental health problem and she stayed there the rest of her life .......a closely guarded secret as there was a social stigma over mental illness.........she was there for 22 years :o(( Merry |

Thankyou Helen,. Germaine & Kate, Some very interesting comments here, things I wouldn't have thought of. Nell, thanks for your efforts with the look ups.........but none of these apply. I know he was alive and in Manchester in the early fifties, because he would come to our home for meals, he was dad's older brother by two years. In 1953 he would have been 50. I remember, he just disappeared off the scene and it wasn't until I was much older that I realised he must have died. As far as I'm aware he had no income and used to go between our house and his two sisters homes opposite for meals and shelter. As we were all poor then, and as I was a child, I never questioned where he went at night? Nothing was said when he stopped calling round and I presume that's because we were so young and would have been upset. In 1953, we were moved out of our home, as it was condemned. I was six, but Arthur had gone long before then, hence the dates I felt would best fit. Well, I shall have to think about this one very carefully and see if I can discover any more info on him. Thanks again for your help ladies. Jen |

How sad Jen, I do hope you find him.. I guess as Kate said, he may have not had anyone to know his full name or age when he died. I found my Nans second husband dying in rather a posh area - not at all where Id been looking. He died in hospital and the informant was his landlord of his lodgings. Sad, but at least I found him and he is on the tree now. |

Jen, since social security and the National Health Service started in the 1940's, there were not workhouses and paupers in the time that you are looking for his death. (But if he died before he was 65, he wouldn't have been getting an old age pension, sorry.) There are some death registrations where the name is given as 'unknown' or something similar, if nobody knew the name of the person who had died, but it would be pretty difficult to find out if one of those was the one you are looking for. Or if he was known by another name, his death could have been registered in that name. Hope you find it eventually! Kate. |

Maybe one of these deaths might be him. Name Birth Date Death Registration Month/Year Death Age (est) District Inferred County Arthur Brandon 13 Apr 1912 Apr 1985 72 Tunbridge Wells Kent Arthur Brandon 24 Feb 1912 Jan 1985 72 Waltham Forest London Arthur Brandon 11 Feb 1905 Oct 1990 85 Colchester Essex Arthur Brandon 21 Aug 1898 Feb 1993 94 Bristol Gloucestershire Arthur Brandon 26 May 1912 Nov 1998 86 Croydon London, Surrey Arthur Cecil Brandon 1 Sep 1909 Sep 1985 75 Arthur Edward Brandon 4 Apr 1902 Jul 1984 82 Isle Of Wight Isle Of Wight Arthur Ernest Brandon 14 May 1906 Dec 1987 81 Harlow Essex, Middlesex Arthur Ernest Brandon 2 Jul 1907 Sep 1993 86 Southampton Hampshire Arthur William Brandon 13 Mar 1904 Jul 1996 92 Huntingdon Huntingdonshire It's possible for the age of death to be out by a bit. Alternatively, he would have been receiving an old age pension? Maybe you could check when that stopped being paid? nell |

He would almost certainly have his death registered. If you haven't been able to find it, then perhaps - especially if the informant wasn't a relative - his age or name(s) were incorrectly recorded. Or he may have died in an area different from the one you expected him to. Or despite his ill health, maybe he lived beyond 1970. nell |

Jen had a check on some of the years you did also went as far as 1970 no sign of him. Even though a pauper I think all deaths would have to be registered. what i was wondering was if he was in an institution perhaps they didn't have his DOB and may have guessed?. I did find one Arthur in Manchester ( for the life of me went back for the details and can't find it now ) was in the earlier years. The age was wrong though. May be worth another check. Germaine x |

I'm trying to find the death ref for one ARTHUR BRANDON born 1903 in Salford, Manchester. He never married and was very ill and could not work for several years before I thought he had died. I was only a child at the time, and he suddenly wasn't there any more. As I was born in 1947.........I believed he had died round about 1951 - 1953. I have searched for his death from 1948 up until 1962. I'm just not able to find his death ref. As there was no-one to care for him, I can't imagine where he ended up.........workhouse, hospital??? I also imagine he was a pauper.........if this was the case, would he have been burried a pauper? And would his death still be registered somewhere? I would really appreciate another pair of eyes please. Jen |
