I have A death record which lists the parents. It says Richard Marshall, Weaver (Deceased) & Janet Marshall, Maiden name Balfour... From this can I assume the mother is still alive?

Louise I have learned from experience never assume anything in genealogy. I think scottish records are pretty accurate but they can only enter information they are supplied with. What date is your death? Georgina.

The daughter died in 1857 & it was the son-in-law who registered the death

Her name was Martha - she married James Brown in about 1816 (I think I've found the marriage & them on 1841/1851) Spotted that family - but able to prove a link yet
