check out: http://www.veteransagency.mod.uk/service_recs/service_recs.htm some records like Army service records pre 1920 are at Kew in the national archive, anything later is held my the MOD. If he left service in or before 1920ish, then what the national archives have is all the exsists and that is only around 20% of what was originally held due to a fire. |

Forgot to say:- If the MOD has the records then you need the next of kin to consent to you having access to the records and the MOD charge you usually for the records. |

Catherine, have you already tried to find his birth certificate? What census does he appear in that we could have a snoop at in case one of the super sleuths can find his birth reg for you. |

About two thirds of the WW1 records were destroyed in WW2, so they may not have survived. It's also possible he told porkies about his age to join up - my grandfather did and the birthdate on his death cert is wrong too! nell |

Hi, I was trying to trace my grandads ww1 service record and found a very helpful web site, I think it was called The great war (try doing a search). They have message forums and there was a nice man who had a CD of the Manchester Regiment where he tried to look up my grandad for me, unsuccessfully as it turned out ( probably moved from the Manchester Regiment to another one) but was also able to explain the scribbles on the Medal card which I had downloaded from Kew. Very helpful and useful site. Have a try. |
