Thanks all for your help. Having used the sites you have given me and traced it through I do not think I am too wide of the mark. One of my possible Cliftons originates in Market Street Herts. Modern Markyate. 1851 is in Studham, now there is a possible in Cripplegate in 61says born Herts. In 71 he arrives in Luton. He says born Pinner most of the later census. One son shows himself born Low place Sudbury.No birth certificate for this son. Having studied the maps and info there are two possibilities. All these places are fairly close to the railway. Also close to the old A5 which ran from London through Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and on up North. I am toying with the idea that as a Groom/Ostler he would have found it fairly easy to travel this route. Obviously no proof but of the 4 possibles this appears to be the most likely candidate and I am thinking I should concentrate my efforts on him until proven otherwise. What do you think???

According to Wikipedia it starts at Marble Arch, which is west of Cripplegate

Don't think so - the A 5 goes up through Beds. Cripplegate is definitely in the middle of London, the church of St Giles Cripplegate is completely surrounded by the Barbican development of flats and arts complex. nell

sorry clicked in wrong place The Middlesex Surrey London section shows central London as a grey undefined area with no detail. I was trying to see if Cripplegate was on the Watling street route. ie the A5 I think it now is.

Sorry Helen, I currently have the site archive maps open which is an excellent and very detailed map. Circa 1840. It shows the road details and place names very clearly. The country is dived into squares which show counties some overlap but the area where

Looks as if that is in the middle of the bit that has no detail then. Down around the river between Paddington, Islington, Stepney and Vauxhall. Thankyou for that.

It was almost totally destroyed by bombing in World War II and today is the site of the Barbican Estate and Barbican Centre. The name is preserved in the church of St Giles Cripplegate, and in the Cripplegate ward of the City.

Pinner is in West Middlesex, nearest big town Harrow. Cripplegate is severa miles away to the east, in the Barbican, City of London. If you have a map showing both Pinner and East Grinstead it must be very small scale. I suggest you look at www.streetmap*co.uk as you can zoom in and out of this. nell

Where in relation to Pinner was Cripplegate please? I have looked at most of the searchable maps and cannot find it. I currently have Mapco open Pinner is in the top left and the bottom of the map where I can see is East Grinstead. I have studied this area carefully but do not know which way to go next.
