I finally got a cert yesterday to confirm my GGGG Grandads name. was hoping to find him on 1841 but couldn't, found what i hoped is the family with no GGGG Grandad Master Mariner. I know there are some vessels listings but was there anything like that for 1841? Thanks for any advice |

I can't say for certain, but I think only vessels in port on census night would have been counted. I have several mariners/fishermen who are awol on census night. One of the blighters had lots of different jobs, but manages to be missing in 1841 and 1851 and then conveniently dies in 1858! nell |

Have you tried searching by his name on google? I've got quite a few Master Mariners who are menaces for always being away when the census was taken, and found a few of them that way. Bex |

Oh well was worth asking. Thanks for replies. Luckily he turned up on 61 but my GGG Grandad married in 51 would have been nice to find them together as such. |

Found by googling: 'The returns made for naval vessels in 1841 and 1851 do not appear to have survived. In 1861 the returns for such vessels in both home and foreign waters can be found at the end of the record class, with those for the merchant marine. Thereafter only the returns of naval vessels at sea or in foreign waters were placed at the end of the record class. The schedules for those in British ports can usually be found at the end of the household returns for the registration district in which the port lay.' from www.gendocs.demon*co.uk/census2.html replace * with . |

and from the same source :-((( ' MERCHANT NAVY ~ The enumeration of the merchant marine was not done on one day but was spread over a period of time. This period varied from census to census. Nor were all merchant vessels, or those on board them, treated in the same manner. .... No schedules appear to have been issued in 1841.' |

Tracy, if he was a Master Mariner, doesn't that mean he had got his master's ticket.... in which case he should be recorded as such? I know the date of 1841 presents a problem - the microfilm copies of Lloyd's Captains' Registers held by the National Maritime Museum’s Library list captains and mates of merchant ships who received master's certificates between 1851 and 1948. But there may be records elsewhere. May be worth hunting around. |

And it looks like he was too early Before 1845 Masters and other Officers were not separately registered. Use the Indexes and Registers of Seamen and Seamen's Tickets. going there next |
